WEST ORANGE, N.J., April 2, 2015 – The Jewish Community Housing Corporation of Metropolitan New Jersey (JCHC) has many residents among its retirement communities who are big movie fans, and some of them were among the capacity crowd at the March 25 screening of the documentary film, “The Outrageous Sophie Tucker.” The JCHC co-sponsored the matinee showing at the JCC MetroWest in West Orange as part of the 15th annual festival.

Attendees from JCHC communities, local synagogues, JCC program participants and area residents enjoyed a fascinating look at the life of Sophie Tucker, whose career spanned 60 years in radio, vaudeville and theatre, television and movies. Moviegoers learned about Tucker’s rags-to-riches story as a groundbreaking show business performer through the film and during a lively discussion led by the biographers afterwards.

Everyone received invitations to enjoy a free lunch at the elegant Lester Senior Housing Community in Whippany, one of four senior living communities owned and managed by the JCHC.

After the film, the JCHC raffled off two themed prizes. Area resident Estelle Hollaender took home a festively wrapped set of popcorn bowls and popcorn, and Helen Gisser, a resident of the Lester Senior Housing Community, won a biography about Tucker. Hollaender showed off her raffle prize at the event with Joni Cohen, the film festival chair and Harold Colton-Max, CEO of the JCHC.

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
