WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Liberty Middle School staff and students are excitedly preparing for the premiere of The Little Mermaid on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. Both performances will be held at 7:00 pm.

The Alternative Press paid a visit to Liberty Middle School to catch up with Director John Hellyer and see how rehearsals were going. We were greeter by Director John Hellyer, who, naturally, was wearing a fish hat. as he rehearsed with students..  The cast and crew is comprised of over 50 students and staff, and Hellyer said that "It's is the one event of the year that really brings everyone together...this is truly a group effort."

Mr.  Hellyer is assisted by teachers Vince DeJesus, Patty Richardson, Ms. Alamo, and Amy Shera, who is choreographing the musical.  District Art teachers Melanie Racanelli and Ms. Villa Lobos helped to design sets and costumes along with Ms. Alamo.  In addition, Assistant Principal Aixa Abreu has stepped in to play "Queen Triton."

During rehearsal, the students performed "Kiss the Girl."

Hellyer always makes sure to add a "surprise" to each show.  When LMS performed High School Musical II, Hellyer donned a bodysuit and lip synched to Beyonce's "All the Single Ladies." Principal Bob Klemt showed up in a basketball uniform as well.  This year will be no different, but you'll have to come to the show to see what it will be this year.

This kid-friendly musical version of Disney's The Little Mermaid will include all the favorites: Part of Your World, Under the Sea, Kiss the Girl, and many more.  Performances of Disney’s The Little Mermaid are open to the public. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased by visiting

Would Shedding

How much wood wouldn’t a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck woodn’t?

Enough already.

I get it.  It is an easy mistake to make, misusing would and wouldn’t.  It happens to me all the time.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
