LIVINGSTON, NJ — The total annual ridership for the Livingston Express Shuttle service, which offers round-trip transportation between the Livingston Mall and the South Orange Train Station, increased substantially in 2016, according to Livingston volunteer Alan Karpas.

Karpas presented the highlights of the yearly ridership to the Livingston Township Council at its meeting on Monday, where the council was proud to hear of the shuttle’s recent success.

Compared to 2015, which saw a total of 30,908 riders, Karpas said the ridership increased by 11.59 percent in 2016 with a total of 34,296 riders. He estimated an average of approximately 200-300 riders per day.

In 2017, the service now has permission to advertise on the back of the shuttle, which was not permitted in 2016 due to the emergency exit. Since the annual cost for the township is approximately $3,160 to run the shuttle service, the additional advertisement would accumulate a $3,000 profit for the township.

Coldwell Banker and RWJBarnabas Health have both renewed their advertisements for either side of the shuttle, but Karpas said the committee is in the process of sending proposals to prospective advertisers. He also said the committee has eliminated real estate and medical-related businesses in its search for an advertiser, but currently has proposals out to two banks.

In 2014, the Livingston Township Council voted to extend its contract with the county to operate the shuttle for three more years. The Livingston Express Shuttle will continue to run daily until December 2018, when the council will re-open the topic of extension.

The jitney currently operates two round trips per hour Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
