WEST ORANGE, NJ -  This month’s Third Thursday program will feature Kathleen Carlucci,  Director of Interpretation at the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park. The program will be held at 7:00 p.m. on November 21, 2013 at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park (NHP) Laboratory Complex at 211 Main Street in West Orange. There is no fee for the program. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 973-736-0550 ext.89. The Friends of Thomas Edison NHP will provide light refreshments.

Edison’s experience as a reliable telegrapher and the support of telegraph industry leaders gave him the resources to open his first research and development laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey in 1876. Join us for this illustrated talk as Carlucci leads us through the years when Edison becomes “the Wizard.”
Kathleen Carlucci has been working at the Thomas Edison Center for over five years.  Having a degree in history and education, Kathleen enjoys telling visitors about the wonders of the historic Menlo Park laboratory site.  The Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park encompasses the professionally renovated museum, the thirty-six acre Edison State Park, and the seventy-five year old Edison Memorial Tower, which is currently undergoing restoration.  Kathleen worked closely with the Edison Memorial Tower Corporation, the non-profit that manages the site, to create new and exciting exhibits at the renovated Menlo Park museum, and with the non-profit, continues to create new public programs.  Located at 37 Christie Street, Edison, NJ, the Center is open to the public Thursdaythrough Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This program is part of The Year of Innovation celebrating the New Jersey 350th Anniversary in 2014. Since 1664 New Jersey has provided a welcome home for inventors and entrepreneurs like Thomas Edison and there is no better place to learn about the history of innovation than Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange. Special programs for all ages will be offered monthly. For more information and updates about THE YEAR OF INNOVATION, First Friday, Second Saturday and Third Thursday events, please visit www.nps.gov/edis monthly.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
