WEST ORANGE, NJ — For the second-consecutive year, a Morris County business leader received the prestigious Kenneth A. DeGhetto Champion’s Cup at the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges’ 23rd annual Kids Care Club Golf Outing held Sept. 18 at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange.

Daren Phil, president and chief operations officer of Suburban Consulting Engineers, Inc., is the first person to twice receive the Kenneth A. DeGhetto Champion’s Cup.

“Daren has a can-do spirit that is contagious as he advocates on behalf of the YMCA,” Metro YMCA President and CEO Richard K. Gorab said. “Phil stepped up again in a big way this year to make the golf outing a huge success.”

Suburban Consulting Engineers this year joined the Metro YMCA’s longtime benefactor, Eastman Companies, as a presenting sponsor of the tournament, held at the Montclair Golf Club.

“Daren recruited 25 golfers and sponsors so that the Metro YMCA can continue to support children and families in need,” Metro YMCA Chief Development Officer Lisa Kelly said.

More than 142 golfers attended the annual event, which has raised $1.6 million since 1994, according to Kelly. The Metro YMCA’s six branches use the proceeds to provide programs and services to children, adults and seniors who otherwise could not afford them.

The Metro YMCA established the Kenneth A. DeGhetto award in 2011 to recognize a spirit of generosity, sportsmanship and an unwavering support of the Y’s mission. It is named for its first recipient, a longtime Metro YMCA director who died last September at the age of 92.

“Getting involved and being a part of the impact that the Metro YMCA delivers to strengthen our communities has been a life-changing experience for me,” said Phil, who joined the Metro YMCA board of directors in 2013.

He had no ties to any YMCA until his engineering firm helped redevelop Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, and he was impressed.

That the Champion’s Cup is named for DeGhetto “makes this award so special,” Phil said. “Ken was such an honorable person. I am blessed to be a part of such a wonderful group of caring individuals who are so generous with their time and resources.”

In April, Phil received the first-ever Kenneth A. DeGhetto Philanthropic Ambassador Award for his exemplary service as a board member. Phil, who serves on the executive committee and chairs its building and property committee, passionately promotes the Metro YMCA in the community, attends numerous YMCA events, and generously supports the nonprofit, just as DeGhetto had, Kelly said.
