LIVINGSTON, NJ — The Metropolitan YMCA of the Orangers recently promoted Greg Albers to vice president of marketing and communications of the largest association of YMCAs in New Jersey.

Albers was working in marketing for a Jewish Community Center in Toledo, Ohio, in 2003 when it became the first JCC in the country to merge with a YMCA.

Albers helped establish the YMCA of Greater Toledo as a premier community center through campaigns, events and a strong online presence. Less than 10 years later, Albers was and winning awards for the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges.

“I've always wanted to work for an organization that I can be proud of and where my talents are utilized," said Albers, who recently was promoted to vice president of marketing and communications. "At the YMCA, I get the best of both worlds."

“Greg has built and leads an outstanding creative team that has been very successful at bringing attention to the impact of the cause-driven work of our YMCA,’’ said Metro YMCA Chief Development Officer Lisa Kelly.

Albers oversees a busy multimedia department that meets the needs of its six branches and other YMCAs that seek its expertise. (The Meadowlands Area YMCA, for example, has tapped the Metro Y to help promote its new facility at the former Brooklyn Nets training center in East Rutherford.)

Under Alber’s leadership in 2013, the Metro YMCA won the award for outstanding achievement for its website from the North American YMCA Development Organization.

“We strive to reshape what people understand about what the Y is, and what it can do for an individual, for a family, for a whole community,” said Albers, who lives in Sparta with his wife, Amanda, and their four children: 10-year-old Maya, 8-year-old Leah, 4-year-old Cara, and 2-year-old Jonah.

To promote YMCAs throughout the state, Albers volunteers as co-chair of the marketing committee for the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance, planning and executing marketing efforts to promote membership, summer camps and special events.

Along with his wife, the 36-year-old also volunteers for Sussex County YMCA’s Togetherhood program, a social responsibility initiative through which volunteers brainstorm and carry out programs that benefit the community. The group’s first project is to honor area police officers and firefighters on Sept. 11.

Albers grew up playing group sports and believes programs offered at the Y teach kids crucial skills for living, including cooperation and commitment. He played ice hockey from age 5 through college, and coached intramural hockey at his alma mater, Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design.

Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Albers is a proud Green Bay Packers fan. Relatives own coveted season tickets, and he is grateful to get to see games when he visits.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
