WEST ORANGE, NJ - Montclair out shot and out scored against West Orange on Saturday night as a hat trick from senior defenseman Euan Desaulnier propelled Montclair to a 10-3 victory.

Desaulnier scored all three of his goals in a span slightly under four minutes in the third period including one powerplay goal. Montclair scored four goals in the third period and three in each of the prior two to produce its 10 goals. Sophomores Michael Gerne, Remy Parker, and Brock Bowers each had a pair of goals in the contest. Parker and Bowers each also had an assist. Sophomore Coby Antinoro had two helpers in the win for Montclair.

West Orange found themselves playing defensive hockey for much of the game and relying on the counterattack to generate chances. West Orange did get in some good defensive play in the game during the 1st period when senior Elijah Roberts cleared the puck off of the goal line to prevent a goal. Unfortunately for West Orange, Montclair was too dominant offensively.

The Mountaineers scored three consecutive goals in the third period, but at that point the 9-0 deficit they faced made a comeback nearly impossible. Sophomore winger William Fanslau scored a goal with 5:21 left in the third. Senior Alec Hill, who also had an assist to his credit, scored with 3:28 left in the period and Elijah Roberts scored a powerplay goal with 2:18 left in the game. Senior Captain Jonathan Miller contributed two assists in the loss.

Despite the loss, senior Elijah Roberts said he is optimistic that the team can improve.

“So far through six games we’ve noticed a pattern--we play a lazy first and second period, and up the temp in the third when the score gets out of hand," said Roberts following the loss. "Going forward, we’re going to focus on becoming more defensively sound, and generate our offense based off the turnovers that we force. I believe we are headed in the right direction.”

West Orange falls to 0-5-1 with the loss and will play Gill St. Bernard’s on Thurs., Dec. 26 at 3:00 p.m. and will face West Morris on Sat., Dec. 28 at 7:30 pm. Both games will be played at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange. The game against Gill St. Bernard’s is part of the Essex County Hockey Holiday Tournament.

Montclair improves to 3-3-0 and will play Verona on Sun., Dec. 22 at 8:00 p.m. and faces off against Tenafly on Thurs., Dec. 26 at 6:15 p.m. at Clary Anderson Arena in Montclair.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
