WEST ORANGE, NJ - It was hot out there on Sunday—a perfect day for National Ice Cream Day, which falls each year in the US, in the middle of National Ice Cream Month—July, on the third Sunday in July.

At Mark & Julie’s Homemade Ice Cream in West Orange, where guests were invited to receive one free topping on any small, medium or large cup or cone, “lines were around the store," said owner Julie Orenstein. "It reminded me of Star Tavern.”

“The heat definitely helped sales today,” said Orenstein, who shared that while it was in the 90’s, it felt like it was over 100 degrees. "However, I think the idea of it being National Ice Cream Day and our special helped too.”

Other local stores offering specials on July 19 included Carvel, which offered customers a buy-one, get-one free offer on any size or flavor of soft-serve cones and cups all day; and Gelotti of Caldwell, which rewarded members with double coupons over the weekend in honor of the holiday.

In addition, Baskin-Robbins is offering customers a free waffle cone upgrade with a double or triple scoop purchase until the end of July.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
