WEST ORANGE, NJ — The Betty Maddalena Early Learning Center, a new preschool that will be housed at The Life Christian Church in West Orange, will be principaled by Connie Salimbeno, West Orange Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Rutzky announced at its Aug. 28 meeting.

With the resignation of Bruce Arcurio, principal of the Redwood Elementary School, Rutzky said that Dr. Heather Carr will serve as the school’s interim principal. Rutzky stated the following about Dr. Carr in a letter to Redwood parents:

"Dr. Carr has a wealth of teaching and administrative experience. During her career she has taught at both the elementary and middle school levels. She has spent many years in the neighboring Bloomfield School District, as a teacher, principal, and director. Prior to retirement, Dr. Carr served as an elementary principal of Berkeley School where she spent four years working with the school community to address the unique learning needs of her students.

Dr. Carr will have the opportunity to transition with Mr. Arcurio during the week of August 28th. During that week, a Meet and Greet will be provided for the students, staff and parents/guardians on Tuesday, August 29th at 7:00pm in the multi-purpose room.

In the late fall or early winter, we will begin our search for the permanent principal.

Notification will be provided to parents/guardians and staff members who may be interested in serving on the search committee. I hope you can meet Dr. Carr on August 29th or during the first week of school. I believe you will find her to be a kind and caring person who has very high expectations for students."

The next board meeting will be held on Sept. 18.
