SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - June is LGBT Pride Month, with North Jersey Pride planning several events throughout the month in South Orange and Maplewood.
This Sunday, June 5, the first event takes place with the North Jersey Pride Run in South Orange. According to organizers, the North Jersey Pride Run is a 5K race/run, with a loop race course that begins and ends in Grove Park (see the race map here).
The race is open to all, with organizers stating "runners and walkers of all ages, speeds, and styles are welcome to participate in the 5K. Come with your kids, your strollers, and your furry friends for a good time in the back of the back. Looking for a PR on this flat, fast certified 5K course--step up to the front of the pack and lead the way!"
The main race starts at 9 a.m., and the kids race, which is open to kids ages 3 to 9, starts at 10 a.m. All children who participate in either the Kids Race or the 5K will receive a medal. 5K participants will receive a tee shirt. Volunteers are needed to help on race day, and those interested in helping can sign-up online here.
New this year, after the race, the celebration will continue with a post-race Pride buffet brunch at Above Restaurant and Bar, (One South Orange Ave.) which is just $5 for all race registrants and their families. The $5 covers all the food you can eat, and there will be a cash bar with discounted drinks, including a special drink unique to the event.
Above's general manager Mario LaVecchia explained that sponsoring the Pride Run and hosting the brunch was a "perfect match" for the restaurant, given it's proximity to the race course. "We're happy to give back and support this great Pride event, and look forward to welcoming the runners and their families this Sunday," added LaVecchia.
