Orange/West Orange UNICO Awards 11 Scholarships to Area Students

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Orange/West Orange (O/WO) Chapter of UNICO National recently held its 2018 Scholarship Dinner at Mayfair Farms, where one UNICO National Scholarship winner was announced, scholarships in the amount of $ 1,500 were awarded to seven West Orange High School (WOHS) students, local law school students were awarded individual scholarships, and two area high school students were awarded Italian Language Scholarships.

Scholarships were awarded to the seven WOHS students based on their academic achievement, high school extra-curricular activities, community service, and work experiences. They were selected by a committee of O/WO UNICO members chaired by scholarship chairman Frank Gonnella.

Marc Nathniel Younker – Anthony F. & Flora Gonnella Memorial Scholarship;

Aion Elise Ashby – Vecchio Family Memorial Scholarship;

Cameron Gart – O/WO UNICO Scholarship;

Siena Claire Pizzano – O/WO UNICO Scholarship in memory of Carmine Campanile;

Matigan Kohlman – William Martini Memorial Scholarship;

Samantha Herbert – Frank Franklin Memorial Scholarship; and

Gabrielle Petrucelli — the inaugural O/WO UNICO WOHS AF JROTC Scholarship.

Another inaugural scholarship established in memory of Carmine Campanile, a past O/WO UNICO president and UNICO National General Council who died last year, was awarded to Daniel Carola of Seton Hall Law School.  It was also announced that a student sponsored by the O/WO UNICO Chapter was awarded a UNICO National Undergraduate Scholarship. 

Charles Taibi of Randolph High School, a student sponsored by the O/WO UNICO Chapter, will receive the Alphonse Miele Undergraduate Scholarship in the amount of $ 6,000. 

Italian Language Scholarships were also awarded to students for outstanding academic achievement in the Italian Language as selected by their teachers.   Dominick Barone of Seton Hall Prep received the O/WO UNICO Italian Language Scholarship, and Johana Miranda of WOHS received the Michele & Lucia Russo Italian Language Scholarship. 

The O/WO UNICO Chapter awarded 11 scholarships totaling $18,500 during the evening, in addition to $25,000 donated to charities, organizations and causes throughout the year. One of the highlights of the year was when the chapter sponsored a viewing of “After the Fire,” a documentary about the Seton Hall University fire along with a Q&A with two of the survivors, Shawn Simmons and Alvaro Llanos.

The chapter serves the community by providing scholarships and supporting charities on a local and national basis. The organization also actively promotes the recognition of Italian heritage and culture and the contributions Italian Americans have made to the country.
