Phil Orphanidis - Candidate Statement for the West Orange Board of Education

(Editor's Note:  Candidates for local elections are allowed to submit statements and information about their candidacy on the Alternative Press.  We will be presenting information on this year's three candidates for the West Orange Board of Education.  These statements come directly from the candidates themselves and are published verbatim.)

Candidate Phil Orphanidis

On November 5th, I hope to earn your families vote because I am the only candidate to bring back fiscal responsibility to the West Orange Board of Education. Rumors have been started that I would seek to eliminate Varsity sports teams, and those rumors are completely false. However, I would seek to put more of your hard-earned taxpayer dollars back into the classroom, where currently less than $1 in $3 dollars go. Teachers believe their concerns are falling on deaf ears, and so I will work hard to ensure more resources enter the classroom where the most learning occurs.

If elected, I would work hard to make sure our administration and departments are running lean so that every dollar is being used efficiently to educate the children of West Orange, and so taxpayers get the most value for their taxes. I would also be a strong proponent of more diversity in our workforce; hiring teachers of all socioeconomic background, ethnicities, and ages. Reforming our transportation system which costs more than $7.8 million this year alone and buses 7,000 students would be a top priority of mine in my first 3 year term. There are cost, quality, safety and efficiency concerns that I would like to address and fix.

In closing, I will pay close attention to how your hard-earned taxpayer dollars are being spent, and I will make sure you get results for your property taxes so that our home values are positively reflected.  Thank you and I hope to represent you for 3 years on the Board of Education!
