WEST ORANGE, NJ -- The public will be welcome to help honor astronauts Scott and Mark Kelly at the township's Mayoral Awards Ceremony on May 19 marking Kelly Family Day.
The time of the ceremony has been set for 2:45 p.m. on the Town Hall steps and the public is invited to witness history. Mayor Robert Parisi will be awarding the first Mayoral Medals to the twin astronauts who grew up in West Orange in a ceremony that will include West Orange history and present-day pagentry.
Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords is expected to accompany her husband, Mark, for the day's celebrations.
Earlier in the day, the Kellys will be at Pleasantdale Elementary School for a private ceremony renaming the school in their honor, followed by a luncheon. The Kellys are also expected to visit Montclair State University after the Town Hall honors.
Both astronauts, though retired, are still being evaluated by scientists as they compare changes in Scott's body during his 340-day mission to those of his brother, Mark, who remained on earth. They are the only twins to have both gone into space.
As more details become available on the day's events, TAPinto.net will update them accordingly.
