WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange School district Red Ribbon/Anti-Violence Awareness week will culminate on Friday with activities planned at the elementary, middle and high schools.  From posters, assemblies, and theme days, each school, in compliance with the State of New Jersey Harrassment, Intimidation, and Bullying Law, has developed curriculum to educate students and promote character building.

Red Ribbon Week is an offshoot of Patnership for a Drug-Free America, founded in 1980 and committed to education and advocacy on drugs.

School Violence Awareness Week, overseen by West Orange HIB Coordinator Cheryl Butler, continues with the Week of Respect theme from the Week of Oct. 7.

Pleasantdale Elementary School, for example, held theme related physical education classes and dress-up days, a red-ribbon poster contest, and a red-ribbon folder contest. On Wednesday, staff and students wore red to take a stand against drugs.

School guidance counselor Florence Chirichiello, who introduced "Dale from Pleasantdale," a puppet that participates in school activities and assemblies, as well as individual counseling sessions, developed the Pleasantdale Program.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
