In the West Orange Board of Education election, Sandra Mordecai was re-elected by a wide margin, while the battle for the second open seat was a nail biter for Mark Robertson and Phil Orphanidis. Robertson went on to win, beating Orphanidis in what appeared to be 82 votes.

Sandra Mordecai - 4,466 votes

Mark Robertson - 3,137 votes * The Alternative Press erroneously reported this number on Tuesday night as 3317.  It has been corrected.  Our apologies.

Phil Orphanidis - 3,055

Early returns had Robertson and Orphanidis neck and neck, with Robertson ahead by only 11 votes.

Mordecai will begin her second term on the board in January along with newcomer Robertson, who boasts a lengthy resume of educational and professional accomplishments.  Orphanidis, 27, quit his job to campaign full time and went door to door in the township for months.

Once the official totals are authorized by the Township Clerk, the Alternative Press will make necessary adjustments.  Results of provisional ballots have not yet been provided

The Essex County Clerk's Office updated their website at 12:47 pm, noting that:,

Sandra Mordecai, 4337 votes

Mark Robertson,  3005 votes

Phil Orphanidis, 2994 votes

The Alternative Press will continue to provide updates as they become available.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
