WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange police responded to reports of several attempted thefts of motor vehicles within the last week.

According to the West Orange Police Department, sometime between 9 p.m. on Dec. 7 and noon on Dec. 8, a Ford F250 was stolen from a driveway on Watchung Avenue. That vehicle was later recovered on Dec. 10 in Newark.

Another Ford F250 was stolen shortly before 2 a.m. on Dec. 7 on High Street that was parked in front of the car owner's residence, according to police. The victim has a surveillance camera affixed to his residence.

Officers stated in their report that video surveillance shows two males walking south on High Street, at which time one suspect gains access into the vehicle through the locked passenger-side door of the vehicle. While one suspect is seen gaining access, police said a second actor in the video "stands next to a tree, looking around while blocking actor one."  Once the actors entered the vehicle, the video showed them leaving the scene, traveling South on High Street at approximately 1:51 a.m., according to police

Police described the second suspect as a black male wearing a winter hat and jacket with an item in his right hand. The other male was not described. 

Also on Dec. 7, between 9 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., police reported that someone broke into a 2016 BMW 3-Series GT and stole $500 from a purse found inside on the driver's seat. The victim told police that she was doing laundry at the Laundry Depot, frequently exiting and returning to her vehicle, which was parked in the lot of 9 Harrison Avenue.

On Dec. 10, shortly before 9 p.m., West Orange police said a 2004 Mercedes Benz GL550 was broken into on Highwood Road.

According to police, the car owner had video footage that displayed a dark-colored SUV with four occupants stopped in front of his residence at approximately 8:50 p.m. According to police, the Mercedes was parked, unoccupied and unlocked in the driveway to his residence at this time.

In the video, police said one suspect exited the vehicle from the front passenger side and entered the victim's vehicle from the front passenger side. A second suspect exited the suspect vehicle from the rear passenger side and entered the victim vehicle from the front driver side, police said.

The suspects in the video then entered the vehicle and proceeded northbound down Highwood Road. According to police, the victim said nothing was taken from his vehicle at that time.

A third person remained in the suspect vehicle as the driver, and the fourth occupant of the suspect vehicle sat in the rear driver side seat and never exited the suspect vehicle, according to police. 

The victim described the suspects to police as an adult male wearing a facemask, a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, light-colored jeans and white shoes and a second adult male wearing a facemask, a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, light-colored pants and white shoes.
