PERTH AMBOY, NJ — After winning last year’s county meet, the West Orange High School girls swimming team placed third overall in the Essex County SEC Championship meet last week, trailing behind Montclair High School, which had its best joint performance in 30 years, and Columbia, which took first place.

The West Orange girls placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with swimmers Mellany Smith, Madeline Narduzzi, Christina Gilio-Malabre and Kelsey Roberson, edging out second place Newark Academy, 1:54.48 – 1:56.15.

Smith placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.46, and second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.87.

Narduzzi placed third in both the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.42 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.13. Gilio-Malabre finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.34.

Overall, the Montclair girls edged out West Orange, 160.3 – 155.4, and first place finisher Columbia completed the meet at 187.2. 

Seton Hall Prep dominated the boys’ competition, winning by almost 200 points over second place Montclair. The West Orange boys team placed seventh overall.
