WEST ORANGE, NJ — A gray Audi A5 parked in a garage on Sichel Ct. in West Orange caught fire on July 20, but investigators did not notice anything suspicious at the time and no injuries were reported.

Patrol units were dispatched from the West Orange Police Department on Wednesday after receiving calls of a structure fire. Responding officers observed heavy smoke emanating from the garage.

According to police, the adjacent units were evacuated and contact was made with the home and vehicle owner. The owner said that he was advised by the complex’s valet driver that his vehicle was on fire.

Entry was attempted into the vehicle in an effort to remove it from the garage, but the man was overcome by heat and smoke.

The West Orange Fire Department, under the command of Deputy Chief Wannemacher, arrived and was able to contain and extinguish the fire to the vehicle and garage, according to police.

The West Orange Arson Investigator arrived on scene and determined that the origin of the blaze was in the area of the front passenger side of the vehicle, police said.

According to police, the property was deemed safe and the owner was allowed to re-enter the residence. Police also noted that the burned vehicle in insured.
