WEST ORANGE, NJ — The number of candidates running for the West Orange Board of Education in November is down to six after Susan Freivald announced her withdrawal from the race on Sept. 8.

In an official statement on Thursday, Freivald announced that she is pregnant and would miss most of the budget process if elected, but said she remains as “motivated as ever” to continue advocating for all students, parents and staff and to continue “bringing attention and transparency to important issues.”

As of Friday, Sept. 9, the candidates vying for the two open seats expiring on Dec. 31 include incumbents Mark Robertson and Sandra Mordecai, Tanya Atterberry, Sharon Sherman, Stephen Christiano and Christopher Diaz.

Robertson and Mordecai are both up for re-election as their three-year terms expire. Robertson is seeking a second term while Mordecai, also vice-president of the Essex County School Board Association, is seeking a third term.

The two elected board members, newly elected or returning incumbent, will be sworn in at a reorganizational meeting in January.
