WEST ORANGE, NJ — In response to issues faced by families with financial challenges in the West Orange school district, board of education member Sandra Mordecai said at the board’s meeting on Monday that the schools have to ensure that parents whose children are eligible for free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch take advantage of this offering.

Business Administrator John Calavano added that parents can change their status if their financial situation worsens during the year, and get free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch for their children.

Superintendent Jeffrey Rutzky said he would report to the board in a few months to address some of the issues of students who are eligible for this program but don’t apply.

“Every child who is eligible should be on this program since we know that kids who are hungry don’t perform well in school,” he said.
