WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange High School boys soccer team, which just captured the state championship in the Group 4 finals, was still more concerned about the West Orange community. The players stopped by the Mountaintop League Food Drive for the Holy Trinity-West Orange Food Pantry to drop off donations.
The entire team showed up to drop off food for the pantry. According to Cynthia Cumming, the Food Pantry Administrator, "We have had a record year for people seeking food for Thanksgiving, and in general. Food stamps have been cut, and we are also seeing an increase in the number of underemployed, senior citizens, and disabled individuals needing some help."
The Mountaintop League Food Drive provided over 15 turkeys and a carload of food items for the pantry in a two-hour period.
West Orange High boys soccer coach Doug Nevins issued a statement Monday afternoon to the entire West Orange community on behalf of himself, his coaches, and his team:
"I just want to thank all of the people of West Orange for supporting me and the boys soccer team.
This has been a season of ups and downs, and we never would have accomplished what we did without all of you. The parents have been amazing and should enjoy this championship for a long time. The students and teachers that came to the finals were great and made it so loud the players couldn't hear me on the field.
And the players were incredible and peaked at just the right time.
Special thanks to Perry Bashkoff for keeping everyone up-to-date with everything between facebook and twitter.
Special thanks to Bill Schiffman for hiring me 17 years ago for my first coaching job and being there to support the team ever since. Special thanks to Jack McCarthy for being there when we stunk and sticking around when it got a lot better.
Special thanks to Susan and Lou Duarte for hosting 8 pasta parties!
Special thanks to all of the alumni and alumni parents that have come to support us long after their time has gone. And of course special thanks to Angie and Natalie for being the best wife and daughter any coach could every have.
This really is like a giant family and it makes me proud to see all of the past players enjoy this as if they were on the team. I just want to thank all of the people of West Orange for supporting me and the boys soccer team. This has been a season of ups and downs, and we never would have accomplished what we did without all of you.
The coaching staff has been the key to most of this. Jesse Aporta was a great addition and has done wonders with the Freshman team. Freddy Christian not only was great with the JV, but he was even better working with the goalies. Austin Alvarado should be called associate head coach because he puts in just as much work and energy as I do.
