West Orange, NJ:  The United Presbyterian Church of West Orange will screen Participant Media’s A Place at the Table on Friday, September 20 at 7 pm, as part of the national “Take Your Place” community campaign to fight food insecurity. This will be the first screening of this important documentary in West Orange.
Why, in this country where food is bountiful, are so many people hungry?  Why do hard-working people struggle to put food on the table? Why are both hunger and obesity chronic problems?  
In an effort to engage the West Orange community in a conversation about these questions, United Presbyterian Church of West Orange (UPCWO) is inviting local residents to take their place in the fight to end hunger and ensure that all children and families have access to healthy, affordable foods.
 The critically acclaimed documentary A Place at the Table examines the issue of hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity:  Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories of the food her hardworking mother can afford.

Immediately following the film, a panel of specialists in food access will engage in a discussion with the audience.  The panel includes Diane Riley, Director of Advocacy of the CommunityFood Bank of New Jersey, Cynthia Cumming, Food Pantry Administrator for the Holy Trinity-West Orange Food Pantry, and Lachell Miller, Registered Dietitian of ShopRite of West Orange.  
“This screening is a great opportunity to bring the community together to discuss what’s behind this food crisis and what can be done to address it,” said Rev. Rebecca Migliore, pastor UPCWO.  “We want to connect with other people who are concerned about hunger, and we hope that this is the beginning of a greater dialogue.”
A Magnolia Pictures release, the 90 minute film is directed by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush and is made in association with Active Voice and Participant Media.
