WEST ORANGE, NJ — Four championship spring baseball teams within the West Orange Police Athletic League (WOPAL) competing in the United States Amateur Baseball League (USABL) were recognized during last week’s township council meeting.
Council President Susan McCartney made opening remarks regarding the WOPAL Spring 8U team, Spring 9U travel team, Spring 10U travel team and the 14U Spring travel team, proclaiming each group’s accomplishments. Fellow council member and former PAL parent Michelle Casalino took the podium to introduce and present the young athletes with certificates of recognition.
Casalino explained that the delay in acknowledgement of these teams’ feats was due to their continuing baseball activities over the summer, which ended in late July. She then proceeded called up each team and announced their individual attainments.
Coaches were invited to give a more in-depth account of their team’s dedication to the season. All coaches conveyed a message of gratitude to players and parents.
WOPAL recently joined the USABL, which Casalino said is a more competitive league than those in years past, giving these teams achievements more prominence.
The 8U teams finished with an 8-3 record, winning the North Metro Championship, over the New Jersey Axeman.
The 9U Spring travel team completed the season with eight wins, two losses and one tie, winning the Central Northeast division Championship in dominant fashion, 13-1, against Union.
The 10U Spring travel team finished with a 2-2 record, eventually winning the 18th annual Mount Olive Marauders Memorial Blast Tournament in a close game against Denville.
The 14U Spring Travel team emerged victorious in a 3-2 win over Lincoln Park in the National North Division Championship game. The 14U travel team will have its last season as group this fall before heading into high school. The team has been playing together for five years.
