MADISON, NJ — West Orange vocalist Kate Baker and her husband, guitarist Vic Juris, will be the headliners at the New Jersey Jazz Society’s next jazz social, to be held from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at Shanghai Jazz in Madison.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Baker is “one of the most impressive performers to come along in years,” and the Boston Globe said she has “an unmistakably original voice that is smooth and hypnotic.” Juris’ recent album, Vic Plays Victor Young (Steeplechase Productions: 2018), received a four-star review from DownBeat Magazine, which stated that his album is a “sensitively melodically exploratory album of standards and rarely covered airs, as should be expected from a seasoned ensemble with a compatible repertoire.”

Baker has appeared with such jazz luminaries as trumpeter Claudio Roditi, pianist Norman Simmons, and tenor saxophonist Houston Person. Juris was originally inspired by rock ‘n roll legend Chuck Berry, but in his jazz career he has played with other legends, including trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, alto saxophonist Phil Woods and vocalist Sarah Vaughan, among others.

Admission to the social is free for New Jersey Jazz Society members and $10 for non-members. There is also a $10 food/beverage minimum. Shanghai Jazz is located at 24 Main Street in Madison. For more information, Email music@njjs.org, or call 973 214-3380.
