WEST ORANGE, NJ — The public is invited to join the Township of West Orange and the West Orange Human Relations Commission (HRC) to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a family-friendly community event on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at The Life Christian Church.
With the theme of “celebrating freedom,” this free program will feature accomplished advocate, pioneer and strategist, Tamara Harris, a candidate for New Jersey’s 11th District. Additionally, the township will honor West Orange residents whose local contributions benefit the freedoms often take for granted yet challenged in the current political climate.
The honorees, whose professional and volunteer accomplishments mirror the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and enable others to reach their potential, include: Dr. Janice Johnson Dias of the GrassRoots Foundation; Elizabeth Redwine, organizer of Essex Rising Group; Eric and Monique Pryor, champions of the arts and volunteerism; and Lou Mignone, soccer coach extraordinaire.
Created by municipal ordinance in 1992, the HRC annually hosts the West Orange Township MLK Jr. Day Celebration. The commission develops and implements programs and initiatives that encourage a positive and constructive dialogue within the township about diversity related issues.
The Life Christian Church is located at 747 Northfield Avenue in West Orange.
