West Orange Expects 12-14 Inches of Snow and Blizzard Conditions Through Saturday Morning


WEST ORANGE, NJ - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in New Jersey over the next 24 hours for  Eastern Passaic; Western Bergen; Western Essex; Western Passaic; and Western Union Counties.

Accumulations of snow, heavy at times, is expected to be 12-14 inches, with localized higher amounts within developing snow bands. Winds coming from the north of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, are also expected.

Temperatures will drop into the upper twenties by tonight and visibility is expected to be no more than one quarter of a mile. Heavy snow and winds will create dangerous driving conditions with near zero in visibility and white-out conditions.

As of 11:45 am, West Orange has experienced a snow accumulation of approximately two inches.  Roads are still passable, but a mix of slush and snow may make driving dangerous.  The West Orange School district has called for early dismissal.  Last night Essex County Executive Joe DiVicenzo called a State of Emergency in Essex County.

West Orange Township has advised residents that scattered power outages may be expected and to be prepared. They have asked that residents keep the streets clear of parked vehicles, to obey "snow emergency no parking" regulations where posted, park in driveways where available, and call public works 973-325-4067 for roadway snow and ice problems. 

There will be no shuttle service this evening. Garbage and Bulky Trash Collections are canceled for February 9th in the Saturday Zone. Please do not place waste at the curb until Wednesday Collection for regularly scheduled Garbage, Bulky Trash and Commingled Recycling Items. 

All parks and recreation activities have been canceled for Friday and Saturday. For information on Sunday activities please check the weather hotline (973-243-1115).

We ask that you assist emergency responders and clear snow away from the fire hydrant. Please look out for your neighbors, especially the elderly and those in need.
