WEST ORANGE, NJ -- One victim was taken to the hospital for evaluation after a Friday morning fire at an Elm Street residence in West Orange.

According to township spokesman Joe Fagan, the West Orange Fire Department responded to a structure fire at about 10:15 a.m. There was "moderate to heavy smoke on arrival throughout the home. Fire was found in the basement and had started in a dryer," according to Fagan.

The fire was extinguished quickly and overhaul confirmed no further spread of the fire. A cat and several snakes were removed during the primary search.

One male resident was transferred to Saint Barnabas Medical Center for evaluation from smoke inhalation. Companies remained on the scene at noon Friday, and the fire investigator and a building official are also on the scene trying to determine the cause and origin.

There were no reported injuries to any WOFD  personnel.
