WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Fire Department held its second annual Awards Ceremony at the Toby Katz Center on Thursday and held a swearing in ceremony for their newest recruit.
Sergio Rivas was sworn in as the department's newest probationary firefighter by Township Clerk Karen Carnevale. Rivas recently completed his Fire Academy and EMT training.
Multiple Commendations, Individual and Unit Citations and Awards of Merit for various life-saving acts deemed worthy of recognition by the WOFD Awards Committee were distributed, including a multi-personnel award given for a May 2014 incident at Essex Green. Several members of the WOFD responded to a confined space incident where a single injured patient was rescued from an underground utility vault into which he had fallen.
Deputy Fire Chief Tony Vecchio emceed the evening as family, friends and fellow firefighters celebrated the accomplishments of several West Orange firefighters.
