West Orange Girls Basketball’s Mya Bembry Named Super Essex Player of the Year

WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange High School girls basketball sophomore Mya Bembry was named's Super Essex Conference Girls Basketball Player of the Year for 2016-17.

Bembry had an impressive season, as she helped to lead the team to its 23-4 overall record, which drove the team to the top of the Liberty Division for the first time in high school history.

West Orange lost two heartbreakers, one in the Super Essex Conference finals v. Newark Tech, and the other to East Orange in the NJSIAA semifinals. Both games were neck-and-neck with the two-point victories coming in the last second of each game.

The 6-foot-2-inch Bembry averaged 18.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She was also named First Team All Group 4 and First Team All Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division.

In addition to Bembry, senior Jewel Burnett (also named to the NJSIAA All Star Team) was named to First Team All Super Essex Conference-Liberty Divsion. Sophomore Kajia Jones, senior Dawn Flood, and junior Nahtali Simpson were named to Second Team, and juniors Madison Mitchell and Cassidy Ferrell made Honorable Mention.

Essex County Turtle Back Zoo Schedules Family Nights and Zoo-vies This Summer
