WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange High School senior Mya Bembry signed a letter of intent with Penn State to play Division I basketball on Nov. 20 as family, friends and coaches cheered her on.

After fielding offers from around the country, Bembry decided on Penn State and verbally committed on Aug. 7. On Nov. 20, she signed her paperwork and will now play for the Big 10 university.

Bembry scored her 1,000th career point during a 61-36 victory over Teaneck on Jan. 30 and had 10 rebounds and five steals to log her 12th double-double of the year.

Bembry averaged 19.5 points per game, 13.5 rebounds and 4.9 steals as a junior. She was named Super Essex Conference Player of the Year in 2017 and helped capture the first NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 state sectional title in program history on March 7.

She also played a key role in the West Orange girls soccer team's first Section 1, Group 4 and Essex County Tournament championships this fall.
