WEST ORANGE, NJ – Escriptus, the English Honor Society at West Orange High School, bid farewell to its graduating seniors and welcomed its 10 new members on May 27.

Outgoing Advisor Tynia Thomassie opened the ceremony, explaining that Escriptus is one of the most rigorous honor societies at WOHS.

“To remain as a member of the Escriptus Honor Society, a student must have an “A” average in Honors or AP courses for all four years of their high school career in language arts and at least a “B” average in all other subjects,” Thomassie said.

“In addition, a student must be published in three different literary venues (print, media, or online), she added. “They must attend meetings and participate in Escriptus projects and activities throughout the year, including Poetry Out Loud.”

Graduating Escriptus President Belle Zhang and incoming President Anupama Krishnan both addressed the membership and audience, which was filled with administrators, family and friends.

Seniors received their cords and recited a poem they created in iambic pentameter in honor of Thomassie, who is turning the reins of Escriptus over to Molly Wachtel and Mindy Harvat.

“Gelast Sceal Mid Are – Duty Goes with Honor,” said Thomassie as she reminded students of the Escriptus motto. “These cords mean something,” she said. “They exemplify qualities of excellence.”

The new members were inducted with the signing of the book and the recitation of a poem, also in iambic pentameter.

Wachtel and Harvat closed the ceremony with a look to the future and enthusiasm about the coming year and high caliber of newly inducted members.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
