WEST ORANGE, NJ – West Orange high school’s FanFest this past Saturday has only added to the sense of unity and school spirit that the school is working to improve this year.

Many clubs from the high school set up tables selling toys, food, drinks, and games to play. These clubs included the Drama club and their face painting and picture booth, the Pioneer Newspaper’s “Scoop for a scoop” game, and the Jubilee choir’s Name-that-tune game. All proceeds made by a club went to support its activities.

Also featured at the FanFest was West Orange’s new mascot, Monty the Mountaineer. He stood by the wrestling team’s mat to take pictures with people, as well as walked around entertaining people and participating in the festivities.

Although the FanFest helped raise money for the clubs at WOHS, it also helped bring the community together. After the FanFest, the Mountaineer football team took to the field in their game against West Essex. The FanFest brought many citizens of West Orange out with their children to have fun and learn more about the clubs, but it also encouraged people to go to the football game after and support the Mountaineer football team.  Though the Mountaineers fell to West Essex, team spirit and school pride were not diminished.

The Fan Fest dispelled the notion that football games are strictly a high school event - and that the games and events at the school are great for any family, no matter the age or grade.

“The afternoon was an extraordinary event. The town has come out to support the high school, and the high school students represent the best of what the youth today can do… It’s absolutely a must for next year,” said Mary Ann McGonigle, long-time English teacher at WOHS and advisor to the sign language club.

Be sure to keep reading The Alternative Press of West Orange for all new family events announced at West Orange High School, and come support the football team on Friday, Sept. 27 in its home game under the lights against Bloomfield at 7 p.m.

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
