WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange High School Tennis Team defeated Belleville, 3-2, at its season opener on Sept. 8 and Head Coach Jeff Mazurek hopes it will be the start of a strong season.

“Last year the team record was 6-11 and this year we want to improve upon that record, with our ultimate goal winning a conference championship,” he said.

Only one senior is on the varsity this year, and only two total in the program. Players to watch this year include sophomore Funmi Oshodi at first singles, junior Captain Siena Pizzano at second singles, and sophomore Alynna Sanchez at first doubles.

“We have a very talented freshman class, led by Kaia Baker, who is currently playing varsity first doubles and is going to be a huge part of our team for the next four years,” said Mazurek.

Varsity captain Siena Pizzano agreed.

“We have a lot of players who have been playing since they were young,” said Pizzano. “Including several of the freshmen. We want a .600 or better record this year, and we’re in pretty good shape.”

“The girls worked extremely hard throughout the summer and have shown so much improvement to this point,” said Mazurek. “It’s a very exciting time for West Orange Tennis.”

The team is currently 1-1, with a tough 3-2 loss to Nutley on Sept. 13. The team will take on Cedar Grove at home on Sept. 15 at 4 p.m.
