WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange High School sponsored the first-of -its-kind Mountaineer Girls Golf Tournament at the Crestmont Country Club in West Orange on June 2.

Eight young female golfers from the Super Essex Conference competed in a nine-hole tournament for three top spots. Participating schools were West Orange, Bloomfield, Caldwell, Glen Ridge and Belleville.

The groundbreaking tournament was notable because most high school golf teams are co-ed, and the tournament was the first all-female golf tournament ever held in Essex County.

Junior Isabele Gonzalez took home the First-Place Trophy, shooting a low score of 40. West Orange sophomore Rachel Ruffino came in second, one stroke behind the leader with a 41, and Bloomfield junior Alexandria Russomanno finished third with a 44. The other participants included Emily Neal and Grace Barrett of Glen Ridge, Kyrsten Fabbricatore and Tran Nguyen of Belleville and Alexa Fillion from Caldwell.

"I organized the tournament to promote women's athletics and women's golf," said West Orange High School Golf Coach Bill Urbanski. "Since the girls participate on co-ed teams, it was nice to see them compete against each other".

"Essex County has a number of talented female high school golfers as the scores on the leader board show," he continued. "My goal is to expand this tournament every year, open it up to other conferences outside Essex County and make it an 18 hole event."

Urbanski went on to thank Crestmont Golf Pro Bob Downey and Ranger Rich D'Aries for their assistance in running the tournament.

"It was a beautiful day for golf," Urbanski noted. "The girls loved it, and the coaches all enjoyed the experience."
