WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange High School seniors Susannah Crowell and Dylan Pennell took top awards at the Essex County Athletic Director’s Association Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner, held at Mayfair Farms on May 13.  Crowell and Pennell ranked near or at the top academically among student-athletes in all Essex County High Schools.

Susannah Crowell has 11 varsity letters in Cross Country, Winter, and Spring Track and Field. She is a Varsity Captain in Cross Country and is also the WOHS Class of 2014 Valedictorian. This summer she will be an Assistant Teacher for youth at the Montclair Art Museums, Yard School of Art.  She will be attending Princeton University in September and plans to major in Engineering.

Dylan Pennell has  varsity letters in Cross Country and Wrestling and has been team Captain in both sports. For the last several years Dylan has been a highly successful fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, a cantor at his church, and has participated in several United States Navy events. Pennell will be attending the United States Naval Academy beginning this summer, where he will study Naval Architecture.

The Alternative Press caught up to Pennell, who said, "I'm very honored to have received the award. It was a rewarding experience to be recognized by both the ECADA and West Orange High School for my academic achievements, as well as meet Essex County's other scholar-athletes."
"I have many people to thank for helping me become the person I am today," he continued, "but I would specifically like to thank head coaches Mr. Joseph Suriano and Mr. Stephan Zichella for giving me the opportunity to grow as an athlete on their teams, for generously recognizing my academic accomplishments, and for always being there for me when I needed a coach, a mentor, and a friend. I am greatly indebted to them and I hope I can continue to make them proud in my future endeavors".

"West Orange High School boasts two of the most impressive scholar athletes in Essex County," said Principal Hayden Moore. “We are very proud of all of our athlete scholars.”

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
