West Orange High School Wind Ensemble Takes Gold at Regional Competition

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange High School Wind Ensemble took gold at the North Jersey School Music Association (NJSMA) Region I Concert Band Festival on Tuesday. Directed by Lew Kelly, the ensemble also took best woodwind section and best soloist.

The West Orange Symphonic Winds and the West Orange Concert Band, under the direction of Erin McClure, took silver, and the Ninth-Grade Band, under the direction of Lisa Swanick, took bronze.

Other schools represented at the festival were West Milford, Parsippany Hills, Hanover Park and Verona.The Tuesday night festival was the first of four festival events held in North Jersey this week. The other performances will take place during the week at Ramapo High School, West Essex High School and Randolph High School.

The Wind Ensemble's gold-rating performances of "March from Symphonic Metamorphosis" by Paul Hindemith and "The Echo Never Fades" by David Gillingham, also earned them the award for best woodwind section. Abigail Litwinoff earned a Best Soloist award for her alto sax solo in "The Echo Never Fades." 

The West Orange Concert Band, under the direction of Erin McClure, received their  Silver rating with performances of "Variation Overture" by Clifton Williams and "Chant and Savage Dance" by Brian Balmages. The West Orange Symphonic Winds, also under the direction of Erin McClure, received a rating of Silver. They performed "Hebrides Suite" by Clare Grundman and "Carnegie Anthem" by William Owens.

The West Orange Ninth Grade Band, under the direction of Lisa Swanick, received a rating of Bronze. They performed "Cumberland Cross" by Carl Strommen and "SunCycles" by Brian Balmages.

The West Orange High School spring band concert will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014 in the West Orange High School auditorium at 7 pm.

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.
