WEST ORANGE, NJ — A mother who told police she lost her money card while taking her son to the movies discovered that someone went on a $294 spending spree soon after the credits were rolling.

The woman told police she that on April 20, she and her son went to one of the theaters at the AMC Dine-In theaters at the Essex Green Shopping Center, according to a police report of the incident.

She told police that she left her VISA Green Dot money card on the counter in front of her seat to pay for her purchases. The server, who was described as wearing a flat-brimmed baseball cap, gave her a receipt, but she could not recall receiving her card back, the report states.

She searched unsuccessfully for the card, then checked her online account, where she discovered the unauthorized purchases, the report states, noting the unknown perpetrator ran up $130 at the ShopRite of East Orange, $94.74 at a Walgreens in East Orange, $16 at No. 1 Kitchen and $53.49 at East Orange Liquors.

The woman cancelled the money card, having the company freeze the account, the report states.
