WEST ORANGE, NJ - Despite a second half surge, the West Orange Boys Basketball team was unable to quell the momentum of University High School in Newark, who beat the Mountaineers 70-43 in their first home game of the season.

University took off in the first period with several full court presses, making it difficult for the Mountaineers to execute their game plan.  Strong defense by University limited the Mountaineers' scoring, and the score after the first period was 16-2.

The second period saw more of the same, with University's trap forcing turnovers. Several 3 pointers by University put the score at 38-11 at the half.

The third period saw a comeback attempt by West Orange, who executed several full court presses to force several turnovers of their own.  At the end of the third, West Orange had reduced University's lead to 53-31.

Fouls by both teams created free throw opportunities in the fourth quarter, but West Orange was unable to stop University's push and the final score was 70-43.  University's top scorers were Frank Howard, 13 pts., Joseph Kelley, 12 pts., Zomir Wright, 9 pts., and Maurice McNamara and Dashon Jones, with 8 pts. apiece.

West Orange's top scorers were Tacai Dryden with 14 points and Andy Fleurantin with 11 points.

West Orange's new  Basketball Coach Greg Tynes said, "University was well-coached and aggressive today.  We're still ironing out bad habits our players have picked up, and the team is not yet able to simulate that level of aggressiveness in practice."

In fact, noted Tynes, he has only been working with the team since December 2.  "The team is used to playing a certain way...they are still learning new systems and habits."

"Coach Tynes is a legend," said Coach Alan of University.  "We came out to play hard and shoot the ball.  West Orange had a rough day shooting," he continued, "and they had an off day."  "We all know it can happen - we are just coming off a loss ourselves."

University is now 4-2-0 and West Orange is 2-3-0.

West Orange will play East Orange at East Orange on Tuesday.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
