West Orange, NJ -- A team of assessors from the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) are scheduled to examine the West Orange Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services for re-accreditation on December 15, 2012.  The WOPD are already members of the program, having attained accreditation status in 2006.

“Endorsement by CALEA is a highly-prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence,” West Orange Police Chief James P. Abbott said. Accreditation results in greater accountability within the agency, increased community advocacy and more confidence in our ability to operate efficiently and respond to community needs.”

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, December 17 at 7PM in the Municipal Courtroom, 60 Main Street. The public may also comment by phone by calling 973-325-4174 on Monday, December 14 from 2-4PM. Telephone comments and appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.

Written comments can be sent to: Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 320, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2201. A copy of the standards is available at the West Orange Police Department, 60 Main Street. Please email comments to rmcdonald@westorange.org.

Accreditation status lasts for three years.

In a telephone conversation with Sergeant Rich McDonald, who is the WOPD's contact person for the CALEA re-accreditation, he added that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, through a grant funded by the Joint Insurance Fund, covers all costs for re-accreditation and membership in the program.  Additionally, as part of the CALEA program, the township gets a reduction in their insurance costs.

For more information please contact Sergeant Rich McDonald in the  West Orange Police Accreditation office at 973-325-4174.

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
