WEST ORANGE, NJ — Members of the West Orange Township Council were asked on Tuesday to reconsider spending $110,000 on an ice bumper car venue in O’Connor Park.

Resident Rosary Morelli spoke up at Tuesday’s meeting, stating that the operation of such a venue can be extremely expensive.

“The ice bumper cars cannot be used in a haphazard way,” she said. “You will need to employ a professional ice manager.”

According to Morelli, other costs could include purchasing a Zamboni and purchasing liability insurance.

“In addition, O’Connor Park is not a good venue for the ice bumper cars,” said Morelli. “It has limited parking and has no bathroom facilities. The township would be better off buying ice time for the bumper cars at the Codey Arena, where the ice can be professionally kept up.”

Councilman Joe Krakoviak agreed with Morelli that this project should not proceed if an expensive Zamboni is needed to keep the ice pristine enough for the bumper cars.

John Gross, chief financial officer, said the administration would look further into the issues pertaining to the ice bumper cars and get back to the council with its recommendation on whether to proceed with this project.

Also raising concerns at the meeting were Robert Daniel, who was among several residents who asked the council to improve the audio quality of the council chamber meeting room, especially to make it easier for seniors with hearing problems to listen to council deliberations; and Michael Landsberg, who asked the council to help cut red tape and improve communications when it comes to making West Orange more business friendly, and to encourage entrepreneurs like him to invest in the town.
