WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange Scholarship Fund is inviting the community to attend a Cocktail Reception in honor of West Orange High School Coach, Teacher, and community activist Joe Suriano, on June 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the Rock Spring Country Club. Tickets are $50 per person. There will be a cash bar. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Suriano Family Scholarship.
Suriano, who retired as Track Coach after 43 years of dedicated service in the West Orange School district, leaves a storied and lasting legacy. Suriano grew up in West Orange and began work as an English teacher in 1969. As a 1965 state champion in the 100-yard dash, Suriano translated his passion for track and began coaching in 1971-never looking back.
During the course of his career, Suriano coached five All-Americans; had three students who qualified for the Olympic Trials; and led the track teams to the State Championships in 1976-1977. In 2014, the WOHS Boys Track Team won the Essex County Relays.
In addition, Suriano Stadium at West Orange High School is named in honor of Suriano, who was named Teacher of the Year in West Orange three times, a Coach of the Year 16 times, an Essex County Coach of the Year twice, and Essex County Retired Coach of the Year on May 12, 2015.
Celebrating 45 years of education to the students of West Orange, Suriano will continue his work as a Language Arts teacher at WOHS in September.
