WEST ORANGE, NJ - For West Orange residents that do not normally attend Town Council meetings, the meeting is divided into two sections: the Conference Agenda, and the Public Agenda.  The Conference Agenda generally begins at 6:30 p.m. and is slotted to provide time for the township to recognize community members for unique accomplishments and incentives and provide updates by the public for town initiatives.

The Sept. 17 Town Council meeting Conference Agenda recognized two Liberty Middle School Students: Lorenzo Giles, First Place, and Anusha Sivandra, Third Place, in the Essex County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) Poster contest, "What Keeps You Drug and Alcohol Free?"

Brittany Berry was recognized with a Mayor's Proclamation for her successful contribution to Discovery Girl magazine's contest asking 'tween' girls to contribute their ideas about being a female tweener in 2013.  Brittany asked her parents if she could compete, and with their permission, entered the contest to discover that out of 8,000 entries, she was the only entry accepted from New Jersey.  In addition, Brittany was invited to a Discovery Girls Summit to share her thoughts and ideas with 35 other selected winners.

Downtown West Orange Director Megan Brill was excited to announce the near completion of their revamped website, along with grant money distribution to the soon to open Oak Barrell Pub for new awnings and the new sign for the recently opened XClusives Barber Shop.

Eight vendors are now participating at the West Orange Farmer' s Market on Fridays at the Quigley's Parking Lot at Harrison Avenue, Main Street, and Eagle Rock Avenue, and three downtown businesses have opened: El Tapatios, Four Corners Deli, and Forteza.

Brill also thanked town historian Joe Fagan and West Orange Energy Commission Chairman Mike Brick for their help in designing the new DWOA logo, soon to be revealed.

Nick Salese, Director of Public Works/Engineering, shared information about the new commingled, single stream recycling program, which has been a huge hit with residents.  Residents can drop off oil and batteries at 25 Lakeside Avenue and announced the next Essex County Hazardous Waste Drop Off day on October 5, from 8:30-4, at 125 Fairview Avenue in Cedar Grove.  Items would include pesticides, herbicides, and other toxic products.  Latex water based paints can be disposed of in regular trash by mixing cat litter into the remaining amount, letting it sit for one hour, and then disposing.

Electronics may be dropped off anytime to the Recycling center on Mt. Pleasant Avenue.

For a few days, rumors spread that Game of Thrones will not return for its final season until April 2019, and while it was clarified that the April return date was likely a false rumor, HBO ...

Let the Games Begin

I am truly awed by the Olympics.  Watching these superb young athletes on TV inspires me to renew my membership to the gym and pursue my lifelong dream of taking home the gold.

The problem is that in my deluded head, I can see actually see myself standing atop the podium.  I am wrapped in a puffy designer ski coat with a huge piece of bling slung around my neck ...
