WEST ORANGE, NJ -  The West Orange Football Club - Mountain Top League kicked off the conference agenda by introducing girls soccer coach Juan Pintado to celebrate and recognize the success of his team on Tuesday, June 24.

The Milan U-11 girls won their division and defeated Somerset Hills in the first round of the playoffs. They also participated in the Memorial Day Cougars tournament and they won the championship.

Sangeeta Badlani followed with a presentation updating the public about the Nikhil Badlani Foundation that has been working hard to raise awareness about traffic safety by educating young drivers and enforcing their "STOP means stop" message.

The foundation has put up posters and signs at various locations around the community such as the schools and train stations and have recently partnered with the police department in West Orange and South Orange to determine the high-traffic areas that require more attention.

Along with traffic safety awareness, the foundation also instituted a music program for kids interested in learning and improving their musical skills by taking lessons. The program has grown from 20 participants in 2012 to 53 current participants from the Middle and High schools in West Orange.

The participants performed at Liberty Middle School for a Musical Celebration and Tribute to Nikhil as well as at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

"I thought that they were great at the celebration, but I thought they were just astounding at the NJPAC," Badlani said.

Those looking for more information on the foundation can visit nikhilbadlanifoundation.org.

The final presentation during the conference agenda was given by West Orange High School Administrators Nancy Mullin, Director of Career and Technical Education and Library Science, and Demond Cowins, Business Education teacher and Cooperative Education Coordinator.

"We have a co-op program where the students take two or three courses specifically in that program in order to develop those skills so that they can become paid interns," Cowins said.

The purpose of the program is to contribute to the development of personal and professional maturity of the students who are accepted.

The program is currently looking for local businesses to provide cooperative education opportunities to students in areas such as accounting, marketing, child development, law, culinary arts, photography, journalism and many more.

Anyone interested in joining the cause can contact Cowins at DCowins@woboe.org or NMullin@woboe.org.

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
