What's Going on in and Around West Orange, Week of August 5


WEST ORANGE, NJ - As we head into the 'Dog Days' of Summer, many residents are away on vacation.  For those of us that remain in town, there's still plenty of fun and fascinating things to do this week.

First up, at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland, August kicks off with a variety of new and useful classes. Here's a sampling of what residents can sign up for:  Thursday evening Yoga series; Adult Wilderness Skills Camp; Friday morning Yoga; Bike Right: Defensive Bike Skills Training; 4-H Young Gardener's Club; Meditation Series for Beginners; Little Explorer's Summer Stroll; 4-H Lego Club, and much more.

Lots of concerts this week as part of the Essex County Summer Music Series.  All concerts are FREE.

Rescheduled for tonight: Essex County Summer Series Concert, The Kootz at Grover Cleveland Park, Brookside Ave. & Runnymede Rd., Essex Fells.  Centennial Park Reception to be held at 5:30,  and the Kootz at 7:00 pm.  The concert will take place in the field by the pond.

 West Orange Public Library: Who Lives in that Hole?

An Essex County Environmental Center Staff Naturalist will teach children between the ages 3 and 8 about animals that burrow in the ground. 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM Meeting Room

West Orange Public Library: Zany Zombie Costume Party

Do your best Walking Dead impression at this zombie costume party, where party-goers will enjoy zombie-themed refreshments, music, and decorations. Open to 6th through 12th grades. 7:00-8:30 pm Meeting Room

Thursday, August 8

Family Movie Night at the Oscar Schindler Performing Arts Center,  will be showing Swiss Family Robinson (1960) -  A classic! Bring a blanket, buy some cracker jacks, meet at the Good Humor ice cream truck as you go back to the 60s with Disney favorite Swiss Family Robinson. A shipwrecked family of emigrants turns a desert island into a dream paradise complete with a 3-story tree house and a menagerie of tamed wild animals in this lavish Walt Disney version of the Johann Wyss classic. Action, laughter, and suspense abound as the Robinson family, through many misadventures and escapades, finally comes to regard the island as their home. The kids will love it!

Digging up West Orange History with Historian Joe Fagan - at the West Orange Public Library.  West Orange Historian Joe Fagan will present a fascinating pictorial retrospective on the glorious past history of Crystal Lake and Eagle Rock Park. Registration is recommended.  Meeting Room, 7:00 pm.

Friday, August 9

Downtown West Orange Farmer's Market, corner of Main/Harrison/Eagle Rock in the Quigley Parking Lot, Noon to 6:00 pm. New vendors, fun for the kids, and competitive prices on farm fresh produce.

West Orange PAL Spring Travel Baseball Teams Wrap Up (Championship Team Photos Included)
