WEST ORANGE, NJ – West Orange sports fans were excited this past Fall by the great run by the WOHS Boys Soccer Team to the State finals. Their coach, Doug Nevins, says that was because of hard work put in well before the season’s official practices start.

In 2002, a then new coach at West Orange High School started a summer soccer camp with 30 kids.

Now, Nevins is ready to host the 14th year of the camp with a lot more players, from early learners to freshman, JV and senior soccer squads from WOHS.

“What is great about the camp is we’ve got kids of all ages playing and learning together….it becomes a close relationship,” says Nevins. “The younger kids watch the older kids and want to emulate them.”

Nevins says first year of the summer camp was also was the first year the WOHS Boys Soccer Team was ranked, and he doesn’t think that was a coincidence. He calls it an intense but fun summer session that has had proven results, and the stats support that claim: since it began, Nevins says the soccer teams have had a 41-9 win-loss record.

The summer camp not only benefits the younger players who learn from the older boys, but also the WOHS teams themselves. “By the time practice starts for the season for WOHS, you’ve had 30 boys who have already worked together for a month off-season,” Nevins said. “That’s a huge advantage when you have a team that is already familiar with each other.”.

But he says the fun part is watching players of all ages working together. “Take a look at these training sessions and you’ll see 2nd graders playing with 12th graders, everyone getting along, getting each other’s backs,” says Nevins. “I’m asking these kids to give me four weeks in their summer to learn and hone their skills and they work hard at it.”

This summer’s camp is divided into four week-long sessions at $200 per week, or a discounted $750 for all four sessions and is open to boys and girls. Players can choose one week or all four:

Session 1: June 27-July 1; Session 2: July 11-15; Session 3: July 18-22 and Session 4: August 8-12. Sessions are held on the West Orange High School soccer field, and run 8:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. on Fridays.

Groundhog Day. The day a tiny mammal’s shadow tells us when winter will come to an end. Me? I prefer my weather forecast in the form of a white raven (the telltale changing of seasons in Westeros).

For a few days, rumors spread that Game of Thrones will not return for its final season until April 2019, and while it was clarified that the April return date was likely a false rumor, HBO ...

Let the Games Begin

I am truly awed by the Olympics.  Watching these superb young athletes on TV inspires me to renew my membership to the gym and pursue my lifelong dream of taking home the gold.

The problem is that in my deluded head, I can see actually see myself standing atop the podium.  I am wrapped in a puffy designer ski coat with a huge piece of bling slung around my neck ...
