LIVINGSTON, NJ — Michael Karu, CPA/CFF, a member of Levine, Jacobs & Company, LLC, was recently named an award recipient in the “Impact” category of the New Jersey Certified Public Accountants’ (NJPA) prestigious NJCPA Ovation Awards.

The Ovation Awards, announced annually during the NJCPA Annual Convention and Expo, were distributed in seven categories: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; Emerging Leaders; Exceptional Educators; Impact; Innovation; Lifetime Leader; and Women to Watch.

“Being recognized by an organization of my peers is truly special and is a testament to all of the hard work that I’ve put in helping to build my firm while giving back to my profession and community,” said Karu, who was specifically recognized for engineering the growth of a firm of eight people and a gross of under $1 million to approximately 30 people and a gross of more than $5 million.

According to the NJCPA, the “Impact” category recognizes those who dedicate meaningful time and energy to any of the following commendable endeavors: giving back to the community; sharing professional expertise to support others; or advancing the interests and needs of the accounting profession through active engagement, leadership or advocacy.

Altruistic and civic-minded, Karu has held many leadership positions in the Rotary Club of West Orange and has also served as treasurer for Help the Children Hear, an organization that repurposes hearing aids for children in third world countries. He has previously served as a board member for the New Jersey Ballet Company and as a trustee, officer and audit chairman of Oheb Shalom Congregation.

Within the Livingston-based firm, Karu has spearheaded Levine, Jacobs & Company’s involvement in numerous philanthropic endeavors—including being a sponsor for Relay for Life, The Livingston Little League, The Fall Tune-Up Soccer Tournament, The Big L Club, as well as an active supporter of many other local organizations. 

Under Karu’s guidance, the firm recently sponsored a food drive in support of two local food pantries and served as a drop-off/pick-up location for “Movers for Moms,” a charity that brings necessary items to women’s shelters in time for Mother’s Day.

Karu is qualified by the Superior Court of New Jersey, Family Part, as an expert witness and as an authority on business valuations, specifically for closely held or family-owned businesses. He is also a Certified Divorce Mediator and is certified in Financial Forensics.

Additionally, Karu received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from The Ohio State University and holds professional memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the AICPA Tax Division and the AICPA Business Valuation, Forensics and Litigation Services Section, as well as the NJ State Society of CPAs. He is also a published author of numerous articles seen in trade and consumer publications and has been a guest on radio and television shows.
