NEWARK, NJ — The West Orange High School (WOHS) student council recently took first place in the Youth and Students for Peace "S!NERGY” competition, a day-long workshop that provided an opportunity for students and young adults to present ideas that promote peace and better societies.

WOHS student council co-president Brett Zeligson led a presentation outlining the group’s idea for creating a calm and mindfulness room at the high school that would provide students with a space to manage their emotions, decrease stress and anxiety, and redirect their energy in a positive way.

This room has already been completed at WOHS and is currently located near the in-school suspension offices of Dean of Students Stephan Zichella.

As winners of the competition, the WOHS student council was awarded $500 and was also able to select a charity to receive a $500 donation. The students selected the Christopher (CJ) Morgan Foundation in honor of a former WOHS student who died over the summer in a training accident while attending the United States Military Academy at West Point.
