WEST ORANGE, NJ — The Orange/West Orange (O/WO) Chapter of UNICO National recently held its 2019 Scholarship Dinner at Mayfair Farms, where two UNICO National Scholarship winners were announced; 10 area high school students and one local law school student were awarded individual scholarships; and two Italian Language Scholarships were given to area high school students.

Local scholarships in the amount of $1,500 were awarded to six West Orange High School (WOHS) students based on their academic achievement, high school extra-curricular activities, community service and work experience. The students were selected by a committee of members chaired by O/WO UNICO member Frank Gonnella. 

The six WOHS student scholarships were awarded as follows:

  • Anthony Petrucci, Jr. of WOHS – Anthony F. & Flora Gonnella Memorial Scholarship;
  • Emily Sarett of WOHS — Vecchio Family Memorial Scholarship;
  • Isabella Feliciano of WOHS — William Martini Memorial Scholarship;
  • Daniel Feinblatt of WOHS — Frank Franklin Memorial Scholarship;
  • Ayana Tapper of WOHS — AF JROTC Scholarship; and
  • Fabrice Henry of WOHS — Automotive Technology, a new scholarship this year.
     

In addition, Edith Zurita from Mount St. Dominic Academy received the D’Agostino Family Scholarship in the amount of $2,000; and two new scholarships in the amount of $750, established for the new Virtual Enterprise International (VEI) program at WOHS, were presented to David Campbell and Ameer Brooks. 

Also new this year was the Ryan Del Guercio Engineering Exploration Scholarship, which was awarded to Sanjay Thampi.

The Carmine Campanile Memorial Law Scholarship was awarded to Nina DePalma of Rutgers University Law School of Seton Hall Law School. 

It was also announced that two students sponsored by the O/WO UNICO Chapter were awarded UNICO National Undergraduate Nursing Scholarships. Kristen Sisco of Randolph, a student at University of Miami, and Kyra Ippolito of Berkeley Heights, a student at Seton Hall University, will receive each receive a Bernard & Carolyn Memorial Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. 

Italian Studies Scholarships were awarded to Michael Ippolito of Seton Hall Prep, who received the Anthony Lupica Italian Studies Scholarship, and Wendy Monterossa of WOHS, who received the Michele & Lucia Russo Italian Studies Scholarship. Both were selected by their teachers.

The O/WO Chapter awarded a total of 15 scholarships, totaling $19,000 during the evening, in addition to the $35,000 it donated to charities, organizations and causes throughout the year.

The O/WO UNICO Chapter serves the community by providing scholarships and supporting charities on a local and national basis. The organization also actively promotes the recognition of Italian heritage and culture and the contributions Italian Americans have made to our country.
