WEST ORANGE, NJ — Authorities are currently investigating an incident in which two individuals were found unresponsive in a car on Llewellyn Avenue in West Orange on Saturday.

“There are two confirmed deaths with no signs of foul play,” said Mayor Robert Parisi. “The deceased were taken away from the scene by the Medical Examiner and the incident is under investigation.”

According to the township, speculation about the cause of death was fueled by posts on several West Orange Facebook groups in real time—some of which caused further distress to family members who saw the posts as events were unfolding.

One post in particular sensationalized the situation and was quickly removed by the group’s administrators. According to the township, this incident has demonstrated how limited knowledge can lead to inaccurate comments being posted on social media and the harm that these posts can cause.

The township has asked that residents avoid spreading misinformation surrounding such incidents.

The victims have not been publicly identified at this time. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
