WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange football team opened its season against the team many consider the No. 1 squad in New Jersey.
The Mountaineers fell behind early by three touchdowns, battled back with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, but St. Peter's Prep pulled away in the second half for a 62-21 victory Friday night.
St. Peter's Prep had a 21-0 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter, West Orange came back with a 1-yard TD run by Josiah Lawson, an 8-yard TD pass from Mason Murdock to Amiyn Hanks and two extra point kicks by Jeff Brutus.
Murdock also connected with Hanks on an 18-yard scoring pass in the third quarter, but by that time, the Marauders had opened a 42-21 lead.
West Orange wide receiver Jayson Raines, a Division 1 Stanford University commit, left the game with an apparent leg injury.
